Department of Public Works Highway Division

The Town of Hartford has a total of approximately 185 miles of highways, including 45 miles of state highway. The remaining mileage of approximately 140 miles is the maintenance responsibility of the Town of Hartford, which is the highest of any community in the State of Vermont according to the most recent statistics.

At this time, there are a total of nine employees in the division. The tasks of the division employees include, but are not limited to, maintenance of both gravel and paved highways, drainage installation and maintenance, vehicle maintenance, maintenance of highway rights of way, street sweeping, snow removal and treatment, pavement marking, and general maintenance.

The division is in the process of updating our existing pavement management program to continue to improve the annual contract paving program and the accuracy of the priorities the program. The Town of Hartford is working cooperatively with the communities of Lebanon, Hanover and Enfield in New Hampshire to continue the completion of a joint paving program for our region.
