As the commercial aspects of our community continue to grow, traffic congestion is becoming a concern in specific areas of our community. One area of interest is the intersection of Rte 5 and Sykes Mountain Ave. in White River Junction. As you may have experienced, this intersection frequently suffers from construction and has difficulty handling larger vehicles making turns onto Sykes Mountain Ave.
The Town has been working with the State to reconfigure this area to better process increasing volumes of traffic passing through this area. To accomplish this a pair of roundabouts has been proposed. The first one will be located at the intersection of Rte 5 and Sykes Mountain Ave. Another smaller roundabout will be located a short distance from the Rte 5 intersection on Sykes Mountain Ave – in the vicinity of the Crossroads Café.
Plans for this project are approx. 80% complete. A number of public meetings have been held and discussions with impacted property owners are ongoing. We hope to see construction funding for this project in the summer of 2010.
Virtually all of the funding for this project is expected to come from State or Federal highway funding sources – small amounts yet to be determined may come become a local share.
