The department protects 38 square miles and covers the 5 villages that make up the town of Hartford (approximate population 10,000):

  • Hartford
  • Quechee
  • West Hartford
  • White River Junction
  • Wilder

The Town of Hartford Fire Department employs 28 full-time employees and approximately 10 call firefighters providing fire and advance life support services to the community. The Fire Department responds to approximately 2,700 emergency calls per year. The central fire station is manned and is located in White River Junction. Station 2 is located in the village of Quechee, there is currently a staffing study in progress to identify the effects of staffing this station.

In addition to the normal services provided by most fire service agencies, the Hartford Fire Department operates at the "All Hazards" level. Our technical rescue program includes equipment and trained personnel to support emergencies that include:

  • Confined space
  • Heights rescue
  • Structural collapse
  • Swift water
  • Trench

The department operates as a mobile support unit for the Vermont Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security responding to events all across the state.
